The new year’s dawn brings a powerful song as Northern Canadian roots-rocker Adrian Sutherland releases the music video for his latest single, “Precious.” I highly suggest you give it a listen; it’s fantastic.
The musicians on the track include Adrian Sutherland on vocals and acoustic guitar, Colin Linden on acoustic, electric, and resonator guitars, John Dymond on bass, and Gary Craig on drums. Their collaboration crafts a sound rooted in Northern Canadian heritage yet universally resonant. “Precious” blends rock, roots, folk, and blues into a gorgeously smooth song.
“Precious was inspired by soulful Black music that came out of the South. It comes from a place of being oppressed – something that Indigenous Peoples and People of Colour understand all too well. It’s an ode to the age-old fight for freedoms and rights that is happening all over the world. The song also pays homage to Mother Earth and her land protectors in its declaration, “This land is precious.” It features a solid backbeat and pow-wow singing, creating an anthem-like feel throughout,” explains the description.
“Precious” Music Video Is A Beautiful Visual Treat
Adrian Sutherland kicks off 2024 with a visual masterpiece in the form of the music video for “Precious.” The video, shot in Winnipeg in October, features four youth dancers, three Adrians, two locations, and one black jeep, creating a contemporary throwback reminiscent of Alanis Morrissette’s iconic “Ironic” video. And yes, this is a great time to check out that music video from 1996.
Adrian’s life is multifaceted, with various roles and identities that he embodies. As a musician, he creates and performs music that speaks to his soul and inspires others. Then, as a hunter, he takes on the role of protector and provider, connecting with nature and the land. As a family man, he is a loving and devoted husband and father, committed to nurturing and supporting his loved ones.
The song “Precious” captures these different aspects of Adrian’s life, each distinct and unique. With its driving beat, the song perfectly matches pow-wow, a celebration of life, culture, and community. The mesmerizing performances by the Summer Bear Dance Troupe add to the magic of the song, symbolizing the next generation, the cycle of life, and the hope for a better tomorrow.
The Summer Bear Dance Troupe is a group of young Indigenous performers who represent the future, the next generation of stewards of the land. Their dance is a powerful expression of their connection to the earth and commitment to preserving it for future generations. Their performance reminds us of the importance of protecting our planet and our communities.
Overall, “Precious” is a celebration of life and the different roles that we play in it. It reminds us that we are all connected and that our actions impact those around us. Through music, dance, and community, we can unite to celebrate our differences and find common ground.

Jorge Requena Ramos, a skilled director, expertly directed the video. Landon Lake, a talented filmmaker, perfectly filmed and edited the video. RoseAnna Schick, who manages the talented musician Adrian Sutherland, oversaw the entire production. The production team filmed the video over two days at Buhler Recreation Park and West End Cultural Centre and had a variety of visually appealing settings to work with. The team worked tirelessly throughout the filming to ensure that every detail was perfect. They carefully crafted every aspect of the video, from the lighting to the sound, to create an unforgettable experience.
The result is a stunning visual masterpiece that showcases the incredible talents of everyone involved. This video is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team.
The collaboration with the SummerBear Dance Troupe, under the leadership of Barbara Nepinak, adds depth and cultural richness to the video. The dance troupe comprises members from various tribes, including Ojibway, Cree, Assiniboine, and Sioux.
Their performances celebrate the Indigenous communities. The original Ojibway name of Nepinak, “Neebin-ni-maqua,” meaning Summer Bear, is echoed throughout the video. The SummerBear Dance Troupe’s performances are a beautiful representation of the Indigenous people’s culture and traditions, and their inclusion in the video adds an extra layer of authenticity and cultural significance.
